Terrifying footage shows Inverness knifeman in gas mask charge at cops with weapon

This is the moment a knife-wielding Scot wearing a gas mask forces police into a standoff before charging at them.

Terrifying footage shows droves of emergency crews standing guard in Polvadie View, Inverness, on Thursday, March 31.

In a shocking clip shared with the Daily Record, the man stands close to a wall of a block of flats. Around a metre above his head, dark plumes of smoke billow out of a small window.

Locals speculated that one of the flats had been set alight.

The man was seen in combat clothing and holding a knife (HANDOUT)

Wearing combat gear and what appears to be a gas mask, the man stands in a defensive position, brandishing a knife.

Droves of police officers are seen standing guard right across Polvadie View and adjoining roads while a number of police motors are parked at the scene.

Surrounded by officers keeping a safe distance, the man appears to be shouting to which one male officer replies "okay".

Police and fire crews scrambled to the scene (HANDOUT)

Smoke blankets much of the residential area and a siren can be heard in the background. Seconds later a fire engine appears on the scene.

Soon after, the man charges at police officers.

Running across a grassy area, the man begins swinging his arms in a circular motion, still carrying the knife as other officers charge towards him in a bid to stop him.

Witnesses reported that the man was shot by officers.

Police Scotland have now confirmed the man has been arrested.

A statement on North Police twitter account reads: "A 40-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and has been conveyed to Raigmore Hospital.

"Enquiries into the incident are ongoing. The incident is contained and there is no wider threat to the public."

It is not yet known whether there have been any other injuries following the incident.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman told the Record: "We were called to Polvadie View, Inverness at 3.14pm on Thursday.

"Several appliances were sent to the scene and are still in attendance."
