One shocked Brit found a massive venomous huntsman spider in their Tesco bananas - after they had already eaten one.
Craig Harrison, from Windsor, Berkshire, was left terrified after making the horrifying discovery of the huge female spider in his fruit, with a swollen sack of its eggs.
The 35-year-old “stumbled backwards” in shock and lost his balance after spotting the lurking arachnid - which is the world's biggest spider.
He was left even more terrified when he also discovered the huge sac of eggs the female spider was carrying - something they're known to aggressively defend on occasion.
It had travelled all the way from the grocer’s suppliers in the Dominican Republic, to the UK.
Speaking to The Sun, he said: “Initially, I was just in shock. I stumbled backwards and lost my balance.
“I didn’t think I was scared of spiders until this but it turns out I might have developed something.”
Craig was able to coax the terrifying beast into some tupperware and sent it to Tesco’s pest control service - who confirmed it was the huntsman spider that can grow up to 12 inches across.
The spiders are attracted to bananas and can hide in them.
Whilst they won't usually attack humans, females of the species can aggressively defend their egg sacs to perceived threats.
Whilst their bite isn’t deadly to humans the venom can cause heart palpitations, vomiting and headaches.
The IT worker is now battling for some compensation, after being offered a £100 in compensation.
Tesco have alerted their provider, where the spider got in, who have increased their checks to prevent others getting in in the future.
A Tesco spokesperson said: “We are sorry Mr Harrison found a spider in his bananas. We have robust processes in places to prevent spiders travelling with our fruit but on very rare occasions they can sometimes sneak through our suppliers’ checks. “
