Tens of thousands of tomatoes cause traffic chaos after lorry spills load on to Californian motorway

Traffic on a busy Californian motorway came to a standstill - after a lorry containing thousands of tomatoes spilled it's load all over the road.

According to local patrol officers, the tomatoes were about the size of a fist each, and stretched over 200ft across multiple lanes, with a red mush about "two feet deep" being formed as a result.

Several lanes on Interstate 80 near Alamo in Vacaville, California were shut on Monday.

Police explained that the incident happened at about 5am, when the lorry collided with a car and swerved, colliding with another vehicle before driving into the central reservation, scattering more than 150,000 tomatoes on to the road, police said.

Other drivers who were unaware of the situation unintentionally drove over them, making things worse as tomato juice combined with oil.

Before police managed to shut the road, one car which had got stuck in the road was hit by another vehicle, causing a pile-up of crashes involving seven cars

Three people, including the driver of the truck, had minor injuries and a fourth person was taken to hospital with a broken leg, patrol officer Jason Tyhurst said.

Before the road was closed, one car stuck in the road was hit by another vehicle, causing a chain reaction of crashes involving seven cars.
