Tennessee has suspended its remaining scheduled execution for 2026 after death row inmate Christa Gail Pike survived an attempted lethal injection at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. Pike, 50, was administered two 50ml doses of pentobarbital on 30 September.

Media witnesses were escorted from the facility at 8:53pm while Pike was still alive. She was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital and was reported to be in critical condition while receiving emergency treatment.
