Tenerife storm: What UK tourists should know amid travel warnings

  • Tenerife has declared a state of emergency as Storm Therese sweeps across the Canary Islands, prompting Aemet, Spain’s meteorological agency, to issue yellow and orange weather warnings.
  • The storm brings forecasts of strong winds, heavy downpours, flash flooding, and rough seas, with rainfall totals potentially exceeding 300mm in parts of La Palma and Tenerife.
  • Mount Teide has been closed due to snow, and the island president, Rosa Dávila, reported numerous incidents including falling lights, power outages, and rescues in coastal areas.
  • While flights from Tenerife's airports are largely operating, 22 flights were delayed at Tenerife North, and holidaymakers are advised to exercise maximum caution and avoid unnecessary travel.
  • The UK Foreign Office has not issued new travel advice for Tenerife, meaning cancellations and insurance claims will depend on individual holiday providers and policy terms.
