Tenants of historic Bristol pub say 'ever-rising costs' have reaffirmed their decision to move on

The operators of an historic pub in Fishponds have said that "ever-rising costs" have reaffirmed their decision to move on from the business after eight and half years. In a post on The Cross Hands Facebook page, the owners said their last day at the pub would be February 26, after which the premises is expected to close for six weeks for a refurbishment before opening with new tenants.

In a post on Facebook, they said: "We made the decision a while ago, and the ever-rising costs we have seen since have reaffirmed we made the right decision.

"We won't miss the stress of running the business, but it is going to be a genuine wrench to leave behind the many friends we have made over the years as well as a great bunch of staff.

"We surrendered the lease back to the Landlord, and they are in the process of getting new tenants, who propose to close the pub for around six weeks for a refurbishment. While I am sure everyone is interested in what they propose, there are only some outline details, and it will be for them to update everyone."

As the premises will be closed, they added that they will be clearing all existing stock before February 26 and will be reducing the prices of their spirits. They wrote: "So if there is something you wanted to try, especially the whiskies, most will be around £3 a shot, not the 18-year-old Glenfiddich or XO Cognac.

"We will also have double up for an extra £1 on some of the house spirits, which all have been reduced to £2.5, such as Beefeater, Bacardi, JD, Jameson, Famous Grouse and Johnnie Walker. We are not keen on having the best-stocked drinks cabinet in Bristol after we leave!"

Situated in Fishponds, not far from the M32, The Cross Hands is well known for its Sunday roasts served and reasonable prices. It was built in 1853 as The Cross Hands Hotel, a traditional coaching inn, and underwent extensive refurbishment in 2010.
