Ten men arrested on suspicion of match-fixing in the League of Ireland

Ten men have been arrested by gardai on suspicion of alleged match-fixing in the League of Ireland.

The Garda National Economic Crime Bureau also searched a number of residential properties as part of their investigation.

The arrests come after an investigation that began in 2019 when reports of suspected match-fixing were received from the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) and Union of European Football Associations (UEFA).

Gardai say that the males, aged from their early 20s to 60s, were arrested at various stations in the Southern Region and Dublin Metropolitan Region.

They have been detained on suspicion of the offence of Conspiracy to Defraud contrary to Common Law under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

Detective Superintendent Catharina Gunne, of the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau, said: "Match-fixing and corruption is a threat to all sports at all levels and undermines public confidence in the fairness of sport.

"It can allow organised crime to infiltrate sport in order to use it to make illicit gains or launder proceeds of crime.”

Gardaí are now appealing for anyone with information in relation to match-fixing to come forward.

People can make a report in confidence to the Anti- Bribery and Corruption Confidential reporting line – 1800 40 60 80 - or to their local garda station.

The FAI said on Wednesday morning: "The Football Association of Ireland notes the latest developments in the Gardai enquiry into alleged match fixing.

"The FAI, in conjunction with UEFA, remains committed to a zero tolerance policy on match fixing. As this is now a legal matter we will be making no further comment."
