Ten family friendly events to do in Bristol this May half term

The final May bank holiday takes place this weekend and most schools in Bristol will be closed for the May half term holiday. On top of the usual attractions open all year round, there are plenty of one-off or week long activities for children of all ages to enjoy in Bristol.

Here we have selected 10 fun things to do and most of the activities are free or low-cost and do not require you to have a car to visit. This is not an exhaustive list but just a snap shot of some of the places you can go this week if you have children and are staying in Bristol for the week long school holiday.

Below is a list of some of the kids events and activities happening throughout the week. They are listed in no particular order.

1. 10 Ways to Play : We The Curious, Millennium Square- May 29-June 2

We The Curious closed in 2022 after a fire and may not reopen again until 2024. But in the meantime the team are offering free activities around the city and next week they will have play equipment for anyone who wants to practise hula hooping, skipping or chalk drawings.

2. Spacemakers Family Picnic : HWCP, Wilmott Park, Hartcliffe- May 30, 12-4pm

Hartcliffe and Withywood Community Partnership are organising a family picnic for local families on Tuesday. They will be organising a range of activities and will have food. You can email the organiser if you wish to attend or make an inquiry.

3. Bramble farm Open Day : Bramble Farm- Saturday June 3, 11-4pm

The farm on the Northern slopes in Knowle will be open as part of Bristol’s Get Growing Trail Bramble farm is one of 29 growing sites that will be hosting public events in June. You can meet the animals and learn to sing with the Natural Voice Network. There will be soft drinks and cakes provided and a BBQ with vegan options available if the weather permits.

4. Children’s Scrapstore activities : Sevier Street, St Werburghs- May 30-June 2

Throughout half term the children’s Scrapstore will continue with their regular under 5 activities but will also have drop off sessions for over 8s. Marvolous Machines will be on Tuesday and Wednesday but places need to be booked in advance and cost £10 for a two hour session.

5. Bank Holiday Family Funday : Propyard, Feeder Road- May 27, 11.30am-6pm

Music, bouncy castles, food, Games and even a bubbleologist will be down at St Philips this Saturday. Tickets are £5 per adult and £3 for children (free entry for under 3s) but all games and bouncy castles are included in the ticket price.

6. Bouncing Bank Holiday : POB, Nibley Road, Shirehampton- May 28, 12-5pm

Six different bouncy castles to choose from, fun games, BBQ and music with Dj Alvin. Free entry and a licensed bar inside.

7. Summer Kids Rave : Bambalan, Beacon Tower- May 30, 10am-12pm

Live DJs, face painting, balloons and disco lights. Tickets need to be purchased in advance on Eventbrite and no food or drink can be taken inside. Soft and alcoholic drinks are sold at the venue and kids eat for free with a paying adult.

8. Birthday Family Day : Bristol Old Vic, King Street- May 30, 11am-3pm

Bristol Old Vic will be celebrating its 257th birthday on Tuesday and will have a series of children’s and family activities to mark the occasion. There will be singing and storytelling activities, birthday themed craft activities and a dressing up corner. There will also be the chance to learn about the history of the oldest continuously working theatre in the English speaking world. Activities are free but can be booked in advance.

9. Weekends of Wonder : Broadmead,- May 27 and 28, June 3 and 4- 12-5pm

Outdoor free street theatre will continue in Broadmead for two more consecutive weekends. Invisible Circus will be bringing ‘Covent Garden style’ performances to various locations in Broadmead and there will even be a treasure hunt. No need to book, just turn up and you will find them.

10. Little Pickles Market: Hanham Community Centre- June 3, 10am-11.30am

Award winning children’s and baby market with a range of pre-loved clothes and toys on sale from local stall holders.
