At least 10 people have died in a fire that ripped through a retirement home in northern Spain early on Friday, the regional government of Aragon said.

The blaze started in a residence for the elderly called Jardines de Villafranca in the tiny town of Villafranca del Ebro around 5am local time (4am in the UK).

It took firefighters a couple of hours to put it out, a spokesperson for the regional government said.

One person was in a critical condition, while several other people were receiving treatment, mainly for suffering from smoke inhalation.

The government spokesperson could not specify whether all the victims in the fire were residents of the retirement home, which housed 82 elderly people.

Spanish newspaper El Mundo reports that the retirement home specialises in dementia treatment.

Firefighters, who came from the area of Zaragoza, a city 35km (22 miles) away, ambulances and police remained on site later on Friday morning.

The cause of the fire was still being investigated.
