Temporary sewer planned on site where 670 new homes may be built

An application has been submitted to install a temporary sewer on a Southport site where up to 670 homes could be built.

The proposal, which also involves the installation of two 2.5m high embankments and a trial sewer at the site on Foul Lane in Southport has been submitted by the site’s owner Homes England.

Sefton Council announced in March it was selling part of the site, the former Kew Park and Ride to Homes England – who already owned adjoining land – to pave the way for residential development.

Problems with the site was discussed in a council report produced about the sale in March, where ground conditions were described as “abnormal” due to “the composition of underlying strata, which contains peat and has extremely poor stability / load-bearing capacity.”

The application by Homes England seeks permission for a trial to be carried out which could last up to eighteen months to assess soil conditions before an application is submitted to redevelop the land at the site.

In a letter sent to the council’s planning department, Homes England said it anticipated 450 HGV deliveries would be sent to the site to provide the material needed to create the embankments.

Homes England said that given the site’s former use as a park and ride catering for nearly 900 cars, the level of traffic coming to and fromt the site would be “significantly less” that through its previous use.

As well as the two embankments, 20m of sewerage would be put in place, with bore holes also being drille,d a storage space constructed and temporary track to ease access.

The developers states the works will enable technical data to be gathered to help inform a future planning application for the site, which has been earmarked in the council’s local plan for residential development for up to 679 homes.

The current application is now open for comments and can be viewed on the council’s online planning portal.
