Temperatures are set to reach up to 14C in London on Monday, bringing to an end the cold snap in the capital.

After several days of minus temperatures, which brought with it logistical issues and power cuts, warmer air is set to come in from the Atlantic. Ice that came alongside snow on December 11 is now beginning to clear across London, making it easier for people to walk.

For Monday, the Met Office said: “[It will be a] windy, cloudy day with further outbreaks of rain and drizzle spreading from the south west.

“A mild day. Gales [will be] affecting coasts in the morning. Some of the rain and drizzle will be persistent and occasionally heavy.”

There is a yellow weather warning for rain in place for other parts of the UK on Monday, with the south west likely to be the most affected. There is also a similar warning for Tuesday in these parts although the most severe rainfall is unlikely to hit the capital.

For Monday night in London, the forecast predicts it to be cloudy and rainy, the minumum temperature of 6C being above that of most maximum temperatures in recent days.

Temperatures could reach 10C on Tuesday. The Met Office statement added: “Cloud and rain affecting Kent [will soon be] clearing eastwards during Tuesday with sunny spells following. Breeze increasing through the afternoon with a few showers, mainly affecting western areas.”

Wednesday is predicted to be bright with showers, some of which will be heavy. Thursday and Friday will probably be unsettled with further rain and showers and wind at times.

The warmer temperatures are likely to be a relief for those who have experienced travel disruption, but it does mean there is now less chance of there being a white Christmas in London.

A Met Office statement added: “Early in the period and towards Christmas conditions are likely to be less cold than of late although a north-south divide is expected to develop.

“Temperatures will remain rather cold in the north with wintry showers likely and a risk of overnight frosts. Towards the south it will remain milder with temperatures close to, or rather above average.”
