Telangana: Rains wreak havoc, two washed away in Asifabad

HYDERABAD: Incessant rains continued to wreak havoc in several districts of the state on Saturday. While two persons were swept away in swirling flood water in Kumuram Bheem Asifabad district, streams, lakes and rivulets overflowed at several places. Road links got snapped due to heavy rains while production in Singareni coal mines has taken a hit.

V Shankar (28) of Manuguru was washed away in Kodipunjula stream where he had gone for fishing with his family. His parents and daughter, who managed to escape, alerted police. His body is yet to be traced. In Dummugudem mandal, 55-year-old Durgamma was swept away in Chinna Gubbala Manga stream.

A cattle herder of Palvancha, B Narsi Reddy, who was caught in the swirling waters of Kinnerasani stream, was rescued by the authorities after he raised an alarm. He was trapped in a gush of water when the irrigation authorities opened the dam gates to let out excess water.

Heavy rain lashes Nirmal, 35 families in Basar stranded

The authorities closed the dam crestgates and brought Reddy to safety.

In Nirmal district, authorities pressed boats into service to shift affected families to safety after their colonies were inundated due to the heavy rain. There were as many as 35 families in Ravindrapur colony in Basar who were stranded in their houses. Local fishermen used their boats to reach out to the stranded residents.

Nirmal district collector Musharaff Faruqui said due to increasing inflows, there is a possibility of releasing water from the Swarna project and advised villagers along the project not to venture towards the stream. Water was released from Kadem Gaddennavagu project.

People have been told to contact Siddipet police on phone Nos. 7901100100 and 8333998699 for help. Villagers have been advised not to cross any overflowing road, bridge or water bodies.
