HYDERABAD: Pravalika, an eight months pregnant woman from Jagtiyal, with an extremely rare high-risk pregnancy with platelet count of just 1,000 and chronic immunological disorder, was saved with the help of an emergency procedure at a city hospital. As her platelet count was extremely low and her blood group very rare - O negative - Pravalika was turned away by many hospitals.
“On evaluation, we found Pravalika has a chronic immunological disorder that affects one in 10,000 pregnant women. Her blood disorder is characterised by a decrease in the count of platelets that help in blood clotting. The risk of bleeding increases due to low platelet levels. Normal platelet levels are above one lakh in pregnant women,” said Dr Neethi Mala Mekala, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, Medicover hospital.
