HYDERABAD: More number of students attended school on the second day with the attendance percentage improving to 42% on Wednesday against a poor 32%, a day earlier.
Altogether, 55 lakh students are enrolled in 38,307 schools in the state. Of them, about 23 lakh students attended offline classes, officials said. Schools were shut in December due to the rise in Covid-19 cases, fuelled by the omicron variant.
According to the school education department, 37, 647 schools resumed physical classes as on Wednesday.
“We are very hopeful that within the next few days more students will start trooping back to school as the virus threat wanes,” a senior education official said.
Among the districts, Asifabad recorded the highest attendance percentage with 53% of students attended physical classes, followed by Khammam with 51% and Jogulamba with 49%.
Even in Hyderabad district, the attendance percentage continued to be low as only 33% of students attended offline classes on Wednesday as against 33% on Tuesday. The attendance percentage at Ranga Reddy and Medak stood at 46 % and 39 % respectively.
Sanitation in schools remained a concern with parents asking school authorities about the Covid protocols and measures being taken on the school premises. With the state giving its nod to resume physical classes, LocalCircles conducted a survey in which 49% of parents in Telangana said that they are willing to send their children to school now and another 33% willing to do so once test positivity rate in their district falls to 2%.
In the survey, which received 2,332 responses from residents across 24 districts, 18% of parents said that they will be sending them for schools only when TPR is 1% or lower.
