Telangana Govt doctors mull legal action to reverse ban on private practice

HYDERABAD: Doctors' associations are now taking legal opinion on the issue of ban on private practice government doctors. The state administration recently issued a GO imposing the ban on all new doctors recruited for government service.

The move has not gone down well with the doctors and they have already put forth a demand that the state to roll back the order and constitute a committee to look into it.

"We have been looking at all options and are in talks with lawyers too. We will take all steps to ensure that this wrong and one-sided order is rolled back," said Mahesh Kumar, president of Healthcare Doctors Reforms Association (HRDA). "This move is detrimental for the poor as it is they who benefit from private practice. In fact, private practice was allowed by the state on the recommendations of a government-appointed committee which had pointed out that it will allow the poor to have better access to services," he added.

"All other states have either made private practice an optional thing or have a NPPA for doctors who do not do private practice. Since Telangana doesn't have an NPPA, it would push doctors to avoid government service. It's a loss for patients who come to government hospitals," said a member from Telangana Government Doctors Association.
