Teenagers killed as train and school bus collide in Belgium

  • Two teenagers are among four people who were killed when a train collided with a school bus in Buggenhout, Belgium, on Tuesday, with the bus driver and another adult also among the deceased.
  • Belgium's transport minister, Jean-Luc Crucke, confirmed the fatalities and extended his condolences to the victims, those injured, and their families.
  • Railway operator Infrabel said the level crossing lights were red and the barriers were down at the time of the collision, adding that an investigation is underway to determine the cause.
  • Belgian ministers, including Deputy Prime Minister Maxime Prevot and Minister for Public Works Annick De Ridder, offered their sympathies, with De Ridder noting it is “too early” to assign responsibility for the accident.
  • European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and other Flemish officials, such as Flanders president Matthias Diependaele and Minister of Education Zuhal Demir, expressed their heartbreak and condolences to all affected by the tragic incident.
