Teenager who 'terrorised' community locked up for entering town centre

A 17-year-old who terrorised a community was locked up for entering St Helens town centre.

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was under a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) after numerous offences in which he 'terrorised' the local community and businesses around St Helens town centre. These included possession of an offensive weapon, drugs offences, anti-social behaviour, assault, breach of a curfew, stealing a bicycle and shoplifting.

The CBO banned the boy from entering certain parts of St Helens, including the town centre. His latest offence occurred on Friday, March 25, when he was seen on Corporation Street in St Helens coming from the bus station, before turning onto Parade Street. He was later cautioned and arrested by an officer for breaching the CBO.

The teenager was sent to a young offenders institution for four months at Liverpool Magistrates Court on March 29. Merseyside Police said the arrest comes as part of a wider crackdown on anti-social behaviour in and around the town centre.

Inspector Stacey Pope said: "Thanks to our work with St Helens Safer Communities, The Youth Offending Service and CPS a teenager who terrorised members of the community and committed several offences over many years has been sentenced. I’d like to thank our officers and those who were involved in successfully detaining this male so that he can no longer cause fear or harm in St Helens.

“We hope this result ensures the safety of our residents and anyone who works in this area from this offender's repeated crimes. Our actions to successfully arrest this boy and return him to court for sentencing shows our continued commitment to robustly deal with any offenders who have a negative impact on the community.

"Anyone with information about any incidents of anti-social or violent behaviour can speak to our local officers or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Always call 999 if a crime is in progress."
