Police have charged a 16-year-old boy with stabbing a 17-year-old boy at a Brisbane high school, allegedly leaving him with life-threatening injuries.

The alleged incident took place at the Islamic College of Brisbane in Karawatha, south of Brisbane, at about 11.45am on Tuesday.

Queensland police allege that the boy stabbed a 17-year-old boy with a small knife during an altercation, causing life-threatening injuries. The two know each other, a police spokesperson said.

The alleged perpetrator then left the scene on foot, police say.

He was located a short time later in a vehicle on Gowan Road, Stretton, according to police.

He was charged with one count of committing an act intended to maim, disfigure or disable and one count of unlawful possession of weapons category M.

He will appear before Richlands children’s court on Wednesday.

The 17-year-old boy was taken to hospital for treatment for what Queensland police described as “life-threatening injuries”.

A spokesperson for the Princess Alexandra hospital said on Tuesday afternoon the boy was in a stable condition in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

A spokesperson for the Islamic College of Brisbane said the school went into a short lockdown after calling emergency services to report the incident.

“After the situation was contained, students and staff were sent home,” the spokesperson said. “The school is working with authorities, and counselling and support services are available for all school community members should they require it.

“The college will continue to communicate any developments to students and their families, who are urged to avoid any premature and irresponsible speculation around the incident.”

It is the second school stabbing in Queensland this week. In the separate incident, police charged a 15-year-old boy from Kanimbla, in far-north Queensland, after allegedly stabbing another boy at a Cairns school on Monday.

The 15-year-old boy was charged with one count of acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm.

He was refused bail on Monday and was due to appear in the Cairns children’s court on Tuesday.
