Teenager killed, another injured in quad bike crash at Oldina, Tasmania

A 16-year-old has died after a quad bike crash in Tasmania's north-west.

Tasmania Police said the 16-year-old male driver and a 16-year-old female passenger were taken to the North West Regional Hospital in critical conditions after the crash at Oldina, near Burnie, about 3pm on Saturday.

On Sunday, Tasmania Police said the boy had died as a result of his injuries.

The crash is being investigated, with a report to be prepared for the coroner.

Tasmania Police Detective Inspector Kim Steven said the incident was "another unfortunate terrible death on our roads" that police were "struggling to explain".

"It's another one of those instances where you look back 24 hours from today, they were happily going about their lives."

He said early investigations indicates the pair were travelling down a gravel road when they lost control on a corner, hit a bridge and fell two to three metres into a creek, where they were located.

The female was stable as of Sunday morning, and is expected to undergo more CT scans and recover in hospital.

Inspector Steven said it is believed both people were wearing helmets.

The death brings the state's road toll to 48, up 20 from the same time last year.

"All I can ask is each person take responsibility when they're behind the wheel, or they're a passenger in the car. If you don't like what the driver is doing, you tell them. Tell them to stop, tell them you're not happy with what they're doing," Detective Inspector Steven said.

"Make the decision, don't sit back and be the quiet voice because you might not last."

"I can only imagine what the family is going through now, and I don't want to have this discussion with any other family if we can help it."

Mayor of Waratah-Wynyard area, Mary Duniam, asked for the grieving families to be shown respect.

"This is such a tragedy and I send my condolences to the family and friends of this young person who has died as a result of this tragic accident.

"The community is always affected by tragedies such as these and I think we must respect the family and the friends of this young person who has passed away as a result of the accident."
