A teenage boy who vanished while swimming on the Hawkesbury River in Western Sydney has been found dead.
The 16-year-old went missing at about 12pm on Wednesday while swimming in the river at Windsor Beach — a spot where numerous drownings have occurred in recent years.
PolAir, police divers, the State Emergency Service and NSW Ambulance searched the river for hours.
His body was located hours later, at about 4:20pm.
It is yet to be formally identified and his death is not being treated as suspicious.
Windsor Beach is a popular spot for locals wishing to escape the heat in summer it but can present high risks for swimmers.
Last year the Royal Life Saving Society ranked Windsor on the Hawkesbury as the second-worst spot for drownings in New South Wales.
The council later installed two flotation devices on the shore after requests from the community.
Locals say the undercurrents can take people by surprise and cause them to get stuck.
A report about the drowning death will be prepared for the coroner.
