File picture

A teenage boy has died and a young woman - an allegedly suspended driver - has been charged after a crash on the Central Coast in the early hours of Wednesday, July 31.

Officers from Tuggerah Lakes Police District were called to the Pacific Highway at Charmhaven about 1.30am after reports of a single-vehicle crash.

When they arrived at the scene, they found a station wagon which appeared to have hit a tree.

A passenger in the vehicle - a 17-year-old boy - died at the scene and police said on Wednesday morning he was yet to be formally identified.

The driver - a 19-year-old woman - allegedly left the scene following the crash and was found a short time after emergency crews arrived.

She was taken to Gosford Hospital, where she was put under police guard.

In her hospital bed on Wednesday, the woman was charged with dangerous driving occasioning death - drive manner dangerous, negligent driving (occasioning death), fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing death, and drive while suspended.

She was granted conditional bail and will face court on August 26.

A crime scene was established and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing.

Police said a report would be prepared for the coroner.
