New Zealand's Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has added his voice to widespread condemnation of a viral rugby tackle challenge, following the death of a teenager from a head injury.

Ryan Satterthwaite, 19, died in Palmerston North on Monday after participating in the "run it straight" tackle challenge with a group of friends.
