Boy, 16, dies in hit-run moped crash near Orpington shopping centre

A 16-year-old boy has died after being knocked off his moped by a car into the path of another vehicle on a busy road in south east London.

Police were called to a collision between the bike and an orange Vauxhall Mokka near Nugent shopping complex in Sevenoaks Way, St Paul’s Cray, Orpington at 3.32pm on Monday.

Homicide detectives believe a red Mercedes initially collided with the moped, causing the rider to veer into the path of the Mokka. The driver and passengers fled.

Officers, paramedics and London’s Air Ambulance attended.

Despite the efforts of emergency services, the teenager was pronounced dead.

Pictures from the scene show a blue forensic tent erected in the middle of the road.

The victim’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by officers.

The driver of the Mokka and was treated for shock. There have been no arrests.

Sevenoaks Way was closed while crews dealt with the incident but it has since reopened.

Detective Inspector Martin Thorpe, leading homicide detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, said: “At this early stage in the investigation, we believe a red Mercedes car collided with the moped, causing the rider to veer into the path of the orange Vauxhall Mokka car.

“We have recovered the Mercedes a short distance away from the collision site, but we have not located the driver or any passengers in the vehicle.

“I’m appealing for anyone who was in Sevenoaks Way on Monday at around 3.30pm, near to the Currys store, who may have seen anything, or recorded any dash cam or mobile phone footage to contact us immediately.

“A teenage boy has tragically lost his life and his family and friends urgently need answers as to how and why this has happened.”

Any witnesses or anyone with any information is asked to call police on 101, quoting CAD 4890/09OCT, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
