Teen 'feared for life' when Rainton Arena bouncer allegedly choked her

A teenage girl said she thought she was going to die when she was allegedly choked by a bouncer at an under-18s club night.

A video taken at Rainton Arena in Houghton-le-Spring shows a doorman who appears to have his hands around a teenage girl's neck.

The incident is said to have happened during an event called 'WE ARE BOUNCE' on Friday, May 19 and Northumbria Police has confirmed it is investigating a report of an assault.

Now BBC's Newsbeat has spoken to 14-year-old Amarii who said she was the girl ejected from the teen disco by security, the Mirror reports.

Amarii has spoken of how she feared for her life during the incident as she "couldn't breathe."

The teen told BBC Newsbeat she got into an argument with door staff when they refused to let her re-enter the venue. She said two bouncers came over to calm the situation but then a third "came out of nowhere" and "started screaming and shoving".

Amarii said the experience has left her struggling to sleep and a fear of being in "in crowded spaces".

Her mum, Gemma, said things escalated when Amarii got upset at being pushed.

In the Newsbeat interview, Gemma said Amarii "got a bit mouthy" but wasn't "any kind of threat to anybody", and the reaction was over the top.

Some people online suggested Amarii was drunk, an allegation Gemma vehemently refutes.

The mum continued: "The children had to be breathalysed before they went into the event, so how could she have been drunk?

"She wasn't drunk. It's just ridiculous that people are actually trying to find some kind of blame.

"She's had posts saying she deserved it because of the way that she was dressed, which is just absolutely outrageous."

Rainton Arena, which hosts music and entertainment events, says it's co-operating with police, and the security company it uses has sacked the staff member.

A statement from Rainton Arena that was posted on its social media pages said: "We do not condone behaviour of that sort in any way. The Police and Security Industry Authority are aware of the incident and are dealing with this accordingly.

"All CCTV coverage has been reviewed by the venue along with the parent of the child concerned. The child’s parents are in contact with the Security Company and a full investigation of the incident is now ongoing.

"The Security Company is not employed by Rainton Arena, it is a Third Party Company used for the event. We do appreciate your concern but can assure you that this is being dealt with efficiently."

A Northumbria Police spokesperson previously said: “We received a report of assault which is alleged to have taken place at about 9.30pm on Friday at Rainton Meadows Arena, on Mercantile Road, Houghton-le-Spring. No-one is believed to have been seriously injured.

“Enquiries are ongoing."
