A heartbreaking incident unfolded in Tavares, Florida, when a 19-year-old teen, identified as Joshua Montero, was arrested for DUI manslaughter after striking and killing a 2-year-old boy who was riding a tricycle outside his home. The devastating event occurred on Monday evening around 7:15 p.m. as Montero was speeding down a road in a Toyota Tacoma.
According to an arrest affidavit, children were playing in the cul-de-sac in front of their home when the parents witnessed Montero's reckless driving. Despite their desperate pleas for him to slow down, Montero failed to heed their warnings and tragically struck the toddler as he rode his blue tricycle.
Police reported that the truck ran over the child, dragging him and the bicycle a few feet before coming to a stop. Neighbors rushed to the scene to administer CPR until paramedics arrived, but the young boy succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to the hospital.
Upon investigation, Montero was found in the driver's seat of the truck exhibiting signs of intoxication, including a strong odor of alcohol and bloodshot, glassy eyes. Subsequent testing revealed his blood alcohol level to be .062 and .057, leading to his arrest on charges of DUI manslaughter.
Montero is currently in custody at the Lake County Jail as the investigation into this tragic incident continues. Authorities suspect that Montero's blood alcohol level was even higher at the time of the crash, underscoring the dangers of driving under the influence.
This devastating event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible and sober driving, especially in residential areas where children may be at play. Our hearts go out to the family of the young victim as they navigate this unimaginable loss.
