Former student challenges his beloved civics teacher in a respectful local election

Virginia Teen Wins Local Election in Rarely Civil Contest Against Former Teacher (CBS Evening News/YouTube)

A local election in Virginia has drawn attention not for political hostility or sharp attacks but for the rare civility and mutual admiration between two candidates on opposite sides of a competitive race. In Surry County, a 19-year-old recent high school graduate challenged an incumbent Conservative for a seat on the Surry County Board of Supervisors.

The twist was that the incumbent happened to be his former civics teacher. Cameran Drew, who graduated from Surry County High School in 2024, made the bold decision to run for office against Kenneth Bell, the teacher he admired deeply. Despite their political contest, the two candidates maintained a level of respect that stood in stark contrast to much of today’s polarized political climate.

Cameran called Bell his favorite teacher, and Bell described his young challenger as a “wonderful young man.” Cameran credited his 44-year-old former teacher with inspiring him to leap into public service. Throughout the campaign, Bell frequently defended Cameran’s age, refusing to criticize his youth and instead praising his commitment to the community.

“Yes, he’s young, but he’s really invested in trying to make a difference,” Bell said. According to the Smithfield Times, Cameran had already launched a motivational speaking business called Prez Productions and created a charitable mentorship organization known as the Produce Your Future Foundation.

His decision to run for the Board of Supervisors came from a desire to help residents and advocate for the young people of Surry County. His campaign leaned heavily on direct-to-camera Instagram videos in which he outlined his goals and encouraged civic engagement among local youth.

The race remained extremely close from beginning to end. When the votes were tallied, Cameran prevailed by a margin of only 10 votes. The narrow victory symbolized both a generational shift and the success of a campaign rooted in optimism rather than division. In this case, the student had overtaken the teacher in the political arena.

Despite the tight results, the race concluded on a note of genuine goodwill. Bell conceded gracefully and offered Cameran warm words of praise and encouragement. “He would have been formidable against any opponent against whom he would have run,” Bell told CBS News.

The unusual campaign has since drawn widespread attention as an example of how politics can remain respectful and even uplifting, proving that disagreement does not have to erase mutual respect or admiration.
