Renowned author Ted Chiang has been awarded the prestigious PEN/Malamud Award for lifetime achievement in short stories. This recognition is a significant milestone for Chiang, as he becomes only the second science fiction writer to receive this honor since the award's inception in 1988.

Chiang, a recipient of multiple Nebula, Hugo, and other science fiction accolades, is celebrated for his captivating collections such as 'Exhalation' and 'Stories of Your Life and Others.' The only other science fiction author to have previously won the PEN/Malamud Award is the esteemed Ursula K. Le Guin.

The award committee chair, Jung Yun, expressed admiration for Chiang's work, describing his stories as a marvel that showcases exceptional creativity and construction. Yun highlighted how Chiang's narratives not only entertain but also encourage readers to ponder, envision, and venture into extraordinary realms beyond their own.

In response to receiving the award, Chiang conveyed his surprise and delight, emphasizing his gratitude for being recognized in such a manner. He expressed a sense of privilege in contributing to the increasing acceptance of science fiction within the broader literary landscape.

Chiang reflected on the unique advantages of the short story format, noting how it allows him to concentrate on a singular idea or moment. He expressed his appreciation for an award that celebrates the art of short storytelling, acknowledging the significance of the form in his creative process.

The PEN/Malamud Award, named in honor of the late fiction writer Bernard Malamud and his wife, Ann, has previously been bestowed upon literary luminaries such as Alice Munro, Jhumpa Lahiri, and Edwidge Danticat. Chiang's latest achievement further solidifies his position as a distinguished figure in the realm of speculative fiction.
