Steve Smith has saved Australia yet again, but even he thought he was out before top-scoring with 71 on a dire opening day of the Test series against Bangladesh.

The team total of 198 could have been closer to 120 if not for Smith's fighting knock on a tricky surface at Darwin's Marrara Stadium.
