Techie rapes woman at Delhi hotel, held

KOLKATA: In a joint raid at Thakurpukur on Saturday night, the Delhi Police and the Kolkata Police arrested an IT professional for allegedly raping a woman after drugging her at a Paharganj hotel and then extorting money from her for the past few months.

The rape case was lodged with the Paharganj police in Delhi against the accused, Shantanu Banerjee. “The case was lodged under IPC 376 and we sought help from the Kolkata Police to arrest the accused who was hiding here,” said a spokesperson of the Delhi Police.

Swati Bhangalia, DC (Behala), said that the accused would be taken to Delhi on transit remand.

According to sources, the accused had befriended the victim over Facebook before calling her to a Paharganj hotel last month. He had invited the woman to his room, ordered dosa, which was allegedly drugged. Then the accused raped her and later, he tried to extort money by threatening to release her nude clippings on various porn sites.

(The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
