The team behind a Clifton bakery that closed down due to the cost of living crisis is opening a cafe on the same site. Called Mercy Mercy Mercy, the new venue on Boyces Avenue by the former Sunday General owners promises brunch, booze and great cups of coffee.
Sunday General was an independent bakery and grocery store that closed in January citing the impact of the cost of living crisis. Owned by Studio B - a design studio above the store - it opened during the second Covid lockdown in the autumn of 2020 with the aim to encourage more people to shop locally.
Now, the site is being reopened by the studio as a neighbourhood cafe with Kate Rummery, manager of the former bakery and store, returning to oversee the new venue. Studio B is also behind the eye-catching branding of Mercy Mercy Mercy and is the creative vision of Wiper & True's huge headquarters in Old Market.

Kate said: "We're lucky we get to do something new in the same space. Loads of people aren't in the same position so we're incredibly fortunate in that respect, so we want to bring something different that people can get excited about again. Hopefully, this project will work well."
The team is currently seeking kitchen and front-of-house teams for Mercy Mercy Mercy - with full job descriptions available on its website. Kate said she's passionate about creating a positive work environment and is committed to being a living wage foundation company.
"We really want to find a creative head chef who can make the kitchen their own. We're looking to have a great grab-and-go offering as well as dining in for brunch and daily specials on salads and sandwiches," Kate said.
The team has already partnered up with some strong independent suppliers including Hard Lines in Cardiff for quality coffee and Wiper & True for beers on tap. Kate also wants to bring a range of readymade cocktails on tap working with Black Lines in London such as espresso martinis.
Mercy Mercy Mercy will be a daytime venue likely to be open seven days a week with limited evening service during the summer months from Thursday to Saturday. It's hoping to open mid to late August 2023 to be announced soon.
