Teacher wanted by police after carrying placard showing Sunak and Braverman as coconuts at pro-Palestine march

A teacher is being sought by police after carrying a placard comparing Rishi Sunak and Suella Braverman to coconuts at Saturday's pro-Palestinian protest in central London.

Marieha Mohsin Hussain, 36, took part in the Armistice Day protest while carrying the sign, the Times newspaper reported.

The sign was the subject of a police appeal. The term can be seen as an offensive racial slur because it suggests a person has betrayed their race.

A friend told the publication: “She is not the sort of person who would ever dream of doing something bad. There is not a malicious bone in her body. She would never do something that was a hate crime.

“Marieha and her family are the most peaceful, lovely, helpful people you would ever meet. I am sure she would not know it would cause any trouble.”

A woman seen carrying a sign showing the Jewish Star of David intertwined with a swastika above the slogan “No British politician should be a ‘friend of Israel’” has separately been identified as a former Labour Party activist.

Kate Varnfield, 66, a former women’s officer for the Eastbourne Constituency Labour Party, is believed to have posted frequently in online forums on the topic of Israel-Palestine.

Her husband, Terrence, 73, told reporters on Monday night that they had “just left the police station” and did not wish to comment, and that the sign had been “taken out of context”.

Police had also released images of four white men seen hurling racist slurs and behaving aggressively at Waterloo Station on Armistice Day.

British Transport Police said three men had been arrested. A spokesman said: “A 57-year-old from Surbiton, a 61-year-old from West Molesey and a 33-year-old from Christchurch are in custody.”

Some 145 people were arrested in total during Saturday’s protest, the Met Police said, as clashes broke out between the far-right, pro-Palestinian protesters and police.

At least 90 of those arrested were far-right counter-protesters.

Several far-right groups were previously described as "already intoxicated, aggressive and clearly looking for confrontation" by the Met’s Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist.
