Teacher banned after admitting ‘infatuation’ with pupil over Instagram

  • Rafiqul Islam, a teacher, has been banned from the profession after confessing an "Edward Cullen type of love" to a pupil via Instagram.
  • The message, sent in 2022 while he worked at Friern Barnet School in north London, included calling the pupil "cute" and stating he loved her.
  • A Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) tribunal found his actions were sexually motivated, despite his denial, and constituted unacceptable professional conduct.
  • Islam claimed he was seeking companionship, had never been in a relationship, and described his feelings as "infatuation," believing the pupil reciprocated.
  • He has been indefinitely banned from teaching in any school, sixth form college, or children's home in England, with the panel noting the clear upset caused to the pupil.
