TCIS Student Wins Prestigious Lester B. Pearson Scholarship to University of Toronto

The Thai-Chinese International School (TCIS) community is celebrating an extraordinary milestone as Rasit (Jett) Nasongkhla has been named a recipient of the prestigious Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship at the University of Toronto in Canada.

Only about 37 students worldwide are selected each year for the Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship, making it one of the most competitive and difficult undergraduate scholarships to receive anywhere in the world. This recognition places him among a very small group of students worldwide who are selected each year not only for their academic excellence, but for their leadership, character and commitment to making a meaningful impact on the world around them.

Jett’s journey reflects a rare blend of intellectual curiosity, humility and purpose. While his academic achievements are outstanding, what distinguishes him is how he applies his knowledge beyond the classroom. As part of a collaborative team of engineers, programmers and robotics experts, Jett contributed to the development of a robot designed to help clear land mines. This is not simply a conceptual project. It is currently being used in real-world efforts to make communities safer.

Thanat Thatthongthae (Frank Yang), Licensee and Chairman of the Board, said, “We are incredibly proud of Jett and not just for what he has accomplished, but for the integrity, humility and global-minded leadership he brings to everything he does. He truly embodies the spirit and aspirations of our school.”

Service is not an obligation for Jett. It is a guiding principle. He believes deeply that our role in society is to help others, and this belief is evident in the way he has shaped his time at TCIS. As the founder and president of the 3D Engineering and Design Club from Grades 9 through 11, he created opportunities for peers to explore innovation and problem-solving. In his role as Vice President and President of the National Honour Society, he worked intentionally to ensure that the organisation’s focus extended beyond recognition and toward meaningful service within the community. Academic Advancement Day is one of the events that Jeff founded at the TCIS. These leadership experiences were not about titles, but about creating impact and bringing others along in that process.

Jett is also multilingual, with Thai as his first language, and he approaches learning with a clear and disciplined mindset. He believes that success is rooted in the continuous acquisition of knowledge, whether in mathematics, engineering or language. This perspective has shaped him into a well-rounded learner who values both depth and breadth, and who understands the importance of communication in an increasingly interconnected world.

His acceptance into the Electrical Engineering programme at the University of Toronto marks the next step in a journey already defined by purpose and action. While his academic achievements are outstanding, what really sets him apart is how he applies what he knows beyond the classroom. In a recent interview, Jett downplayed the idea of being traditionally “creative.” Instead, his creativity has always shown in more technical ways - from spending hours with RC boats as a child to recently designing and 3D-printing one himself. “It worked really well,” he said, with a quiet sense of pride.

Kevin Curran, Head of High School, stated, “Jett is such a hard worker, and it is wonderful to see him get the recognition he deserves. We at TCIS are extremely proud of him for being awarded the Lester B. Pearson Scholarship from the University of Toronto. He will certainly be a positive addition to their school and community. Jett is a creator and an innovator, and I am excited for him as he takes on this next stage of his educational journey. I also look forward to hearing about his future achievements. “

Jett represents the best of what an international school education strives to develop: a student who is capable and compassionate, driven and grounded, successful and committed to contributing to something greater than himself. His achievement reflects his dedication, the support of his family, the guidance of his teachers and a community that believes in the power of education to shape lives.
