Taylor Swift fans applaud VMAs 'revenge dress' – 13 years after Kanye West feud started

Taylor Swift wore her “revenge and redemption” dress to the VMAs, according to fans.

It was 13 years ago that Kanye West jumped on stage during Taylor’s acceptance speech at the MTV awards ceremony in 2009.

She was collecting her prize for the Best Female Video award for 'You Belong with Me' when Kanye ran up and grabbed the mic.

"Yo, Taylor, I'm really happy for you and I'ma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time,” he said.

She was famously wearing a sparkly dress – notably similar to the won she wore last night.

Taylor, Harry Styles and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers were among the winners at the 2022 MTV VMAs.

The star-studded audience was treated to an array of performances and music stars throughout the night at the Prudential Center in New Jersey.

Swift, 32, won the top honour for a 10-minute version of her 2012 breakup song All Too Well and sent fans wild as she made a surprise announcement of a new album coming in October.

The video for All Too Well, which features Stranger Things star Sadie Sink, went viral earlier this year after fans speculated the song was based on Taylor's break-up with actor Jake Gyllenhaal.

She used her acceptance speech to reveal her 10th studio album is on the way.

Fans are now dubbing her outfit a “revenge dress” as she stood proudly in the same position where Kanye stole the show some 13 years ago.

One fan Tweeted: “13 years ago, today, Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift when she received the award for Best Female Video. 13 years later, Taylor Swift is wearing her revenge and redemption dress.”

Another said: "This is Taylor Swift's revenge dress.” “SHE DID THAT SHE DID THAT,” Tweeted a third.

A fourth said: “the fact that she’s wearing almost the same dress after 13 years, symbolic in the taylor swift’s world, and she’s become like one of the greatest artist of our generation screams revenge.”

Taylor announced she is releasing a new album, Midnights, in October.

“You guys, I’m just so proud of what we made, and I know that every second of this moment that we wouldn’t have been able to make this short film if it weren’t for you, the fans,” she said.

“Because I wouldn’t be able to re-record my album [Red (Taylor’s Version)] if it weren’t for you. You emboldened me to do that. And I had sort of made up my mind that if you were going to be this generous and give us this, I thought it might be a fun moment to tell you that my brand new album comes out October 21st. And I will tell you more at midnight.”

Swift’s official website crashed at midnight after she shared the title and cover of the 13-track album, describing it as “the stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life”.

“This is a collection of music written in the middle of the night, a journey through terrors and sweet dreams,” she Tweeted. “The floors we pace and the demons we face.

“For all of us who have tossed and turned and decided to keep the lanterns lit and go searching – hoping that just maybe, when the clock strikes 12 … we’ll meet ourselves.”
