Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn “tried everything” to save their relationship but “career differences” drove a “wedge between them”, according to a new report.
The hitmaker, 33 and the British actor, 32, shocked fans with the revelation they had called time on their six-year relationship last week.
And now a new report claims that Alwyn “struggled” as Swift’s career overshadowed his once the pandemic ended.
A source told DailyMail.com: “The bottom line for the difficulties in their relationship was that Taylor’s career took priority over Joe’s – which can be awkward for a couple when it’s not balanced.
“This drove them apart and ultimately, they both realised they were not on the same page any more. It’s been hard for Joe trying to make it in Hollywood and not quite becoming leading man material while dating one of the most famous women in the world over the last six years.
“It was easier during the pandemic when it was just the two of them, but once things returned to normal, Taylor Swift the superstar emerged, and their differences were even more apparent.”
The insider added that the couple “tried everything they could but ultimately were unable to save the relationship.”
The Standard has contacted Taylor Swift’s reps for comment.
The report comes after Swift was pictured for the first time since news broke of her singledom.
The Anti-Hero singer was spotted in New York’s West Village on Sunday with her long-term music collaborator Jack Antonoff.
Over the weekend, it was first reported that the pair, who started dating in 2016, broke up several weeks ago.
Swift is currently on her The Eras Tour. Conversations With Friends actor Alwyn has not been spotted at any of her shows since she began performing on March 18.
A source told website Entertainment Tonight that the split was amicable and “not dramatic”, adding the relationship had “just run its course”.
Music superstar Swift is believed to have met Joe in 2016 at the Met Gala in New York, and they started dating that October.
In 2021 it was revealed the couple live together in a £7 million home in North London, although she frequently returns to the US where she also has lavish properties.
The famously discreet couple had only been pictured on the red carpet a handful of times.
Alwyn explained last year why he did not wish to discuss his relationship with the singer in the press.
Speaking to the Guardian, he said: “It’s just not for other people. And I don’t say that with aggression. I don’t know how best to talk about it.
“I mean, I’m aware of people’s… of that size of interest and that world existing. It’s just not something I particularly care about, or have much interest in feeding, I guess, because the more it’s fed, the more you are opening a gate for intrusion.”
Taylor Swift has previously dated a string of British superstars including Tom Hiddleston, Harry Styles and Calvin Harris.
