Taxi driver hospitalised after being held at gunpoint outside student accommodation in Dublin

A taxi driver was hospitalised after a horror incident in Dublin saw them being held at gunpoint.

The awful incident took place on Mill Street in Dublin 8 in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

At around 2.45am, the taxi driver was waiting on a pickup outside student accommodation in the area.

He was confronted by a man, armed with a firearm, which he pointed at the driver, demanding they give him money.

The driver - a man aged in his 30s - was then struck in the face and body as the armed man managed to take a number of items of property.

The male gunman fled the scene as gardai arrived. A short foot pursuit ensued and he was arrested. All property was recovered along with the firearm.

The taxi driver was taken to St James' Hospital to be treated for his injuries which are non-life threatening.

A Garda spokesperson told the Irish Mirror: "The male suspect (late 20s) was taken to Kevin Street Garda Station where he is currently detained under Section 30 Offences Against the State Act, 1939.

"Investigations ongoing."
