A £2 soft drink that has been sending shoppers of all ages wild caused "absolute chaos" at Aldi stores up and down the country after it became only the second major retailer to start stocking it. Prime, a hydration drink released by YouTube stars Logan Paul and KSI, was initially only available in Asda, but Aldi started selling it for a limited run.
The drink has been so popular, scuffles broke out as hundreds of people queued to try and get their hands on the viral beverage before it ran out. One person claimed to see adults "pushing children" out of the way to try and get a bottle, which comes in three flavours - Blue Raspberry, Lemon and Lime and Ice Pops.
At the peak of its popularity earlier this year, some bottles were even being listed for sale on eBay for a staggering £10,000. But what is it about Prime that has got so many young people and their exasperated parents desperate to get hold of one?
According to the Prime website, the drink is made up of 10 per cent coconut water and is good for muscle recovery. It is reportedly packed full of electrolytes, antioxidants and B vitamins and contains no sugar.
We wanted to find out if the drink that has got so many people worked up is really worth it, so reporter Ramazani Mwamba, of the Manchester Evening News, bought one to try it out. What does it taste like, and is it really worth all the hysteria?
The taste test
In short, no, it's not worth it. The drink honestly tastes a little like Lucozade and not the nice orange one either, the original.
Recently, Prime have made it an effort to remind journalists that Prime is not an 'energy' drink but a 'hydration' drink. However, in my humble opinion there is no denying that it tastes exactly like one.
It has all the hallmarks of the metallic, chemical taste that most popular energy drinks have despite the tonnes of flavouring they pack into them to make them more palatable. But even in those cases you often find a flavoured energy drink that tastes better than the rest.
This isn't the case with Prime, the raspberry, lemon and lime and ice pop was barely present in their respective flavours and every bottle left me with a horrible soapy after taste. Perhaps KSI and Logan Paul have cracked the code and found a drink that only tastes halfway decent to young kids and teenagers, but I'll be happy if I never have to drink this ever again.
Aldi has become the latest supermarket to sell the drinks at a limited stock. In a statement, Aldi said: "The viral hydration drink created by two popular YouTube stars, KSI and Logan Paul, is available to buy for just £1.99 in Aldi stores nationwide on 29th December. The drink will be a Specialbuy – and as with all Specialbuys, once they’re gone, they’re gone!
"The supermarket is expecting high demand so a purchase limit of one of each variant per customer has been set to ensure as many people as possible get the opportunity to buy the product."
