Tasmanian police say they have found the car they believe was involved in the ramming of a police station entrance in Hobart's east early this morning.

Significant damage was caused to the Clarence Plains Police Station when a car smashed into the front doors around 5:30am and then drove away.

There were no police officers on site at the time and police said nothing was stolen.

Forensic teams gathered evidence at the scene early this morning and a white Ford Courier ute was found at Clarendon Vale,  an adjacent suburb, about five hours later.

Police say they still have not found the driver.

"An individual or individuals have deliberately driven a vehicle into the front entrance of the Clarence Plains Police Station, causing considerable damage," a police spokesman said.

"At this stage, who is responsible is undetermined.

"There are no obvious reasons why someone would want to do that, at this stage."

The station itself is set back from the main road and on the same grounds as the Tasmania Police Academy facility at Rokeby.

Police have appealed to the public for information to help identify the driver.
