Tasmania's Liberal government has lost a fourth cabinet member this year, with Police Minister Jacquie Petrusma quitting state parliament for personal reasons.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff made the announcement on Monday on behalf of Ms Petrusma, who is on leave.
"She has been an enormously dedicated member of my team. I will miss her. Jacquie has been a great friend to me," he told reporters.
"This is Jacquie's personal decision. She has reflected on her 12 years in parliament and has every right to come to that decision to spend more time with her family."
Four MPs have left cabinet in 2022, beginning with education minister Sarah Courtney who quit politics in February citing family reasons.
Upper house member Jane Howlett relinquished portfolio duties in February following the death of her brother, before then-premier Peter Gutwein called time on two decades in politics in April, citing burnout and a desire to spend more time with loved ones.
The departures have come after the Liberals were returned to power in May last year.
Twelve months later, Mr Rockliff announced plans to increase the size of the state's lower house from 25 to 35 members, largely in response to concerns over MP workloads.
"It's a tough gig being a member of parliament and it's a tough gig being a minister. That comes with sacrifice and families wear the brunt of that sacrifice," he said.
A recount will be held in Ms Petrusma's electorate of Franklin from August 15, with her seat all but certain to go to a fellow Liberal.
State parliament's scheduled resumption on August 9 could be pushed back, with the government only holding a one-seat lower house majority.
Ms Petrusma - who held the police, fire and emergency management, prevention of family violence and parks portfolios - was elected to parliament in 2010.
In a statement, she said resigning was a challenging decision.
"As a victim-survivor of family and sexual violence, responding to and the prevention of family and sexual violence was one of the strongest motivations for me becoming an MP," she said.
"I will continue to be a strong advocate ... to help drive further actions and change in attitudes and behaviours to eliminate family and sexual violence in Tasmania."
Tasmania's youngest parliamentarian Felix Ellis, who was elected in a recount in Braddon in 2020 following the resignation of Liberal Joan Rylah, replaces Ms Petrusma in cabinet.
He will take over as police, fire and emergency management minister and assume skills, training and workforce growth duties.
Ms Petrusma's other portfolios have been allocated elsewhere.
