New legislation designed to stop repeat family violence offenders has been introduced to Tasmanian parliament.
Attorney-General Elise Archer on Tuesday tabled the Family Violence Amendment Bill 2022 to the parliament's upper house.
The bill would create a new serial family violence perpetrator declaration, which would apply to adult offenders who have committed more than two family violence offences or been convicted of persistent family violence.
The declaration would affect the offender's future parole prospects and ability to possess a firearm.
It would also direct the court to consider electronic monitoring or a behavioural change program, and would be considered an aggravating feature in any subsequent family violence sentences.
Ms Archer said the reforms would ensure repeat offenders were held to account for their "heinous" actions.
"We know from both national and state data that it is a small percentage of repeat family violence offenders that are responsible for the majority of family violence offending overall," she said.
"These reforms will send a strong and clear message that this violent and criminal behaviour will not be tolerated in Tasmania."
