Taoiseach says Ireland 'will roll out the red carpet' for visit of US President Joe Biden

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said that Ireland will “roll out the red carpet” for US President Joe Biden when he visits.

As first reported by the Irish Mirror, high-level talks are underway for President Biden to visit Ireland at the end of April for a six-day trip.

It is expected that he will be in Dublin for two days, Belfast for two days and Mayo for two days. It is also being examined whether Louth can be included in the itinerary to allow the Democrat to visit his cousins.

Speaking in Wexford, Mr Varadkar said that there have been no official dates confirmed to the Irish Government.

“Whenever he comes, he’ll be extremely welcome, we will roll out the red carpet for a wonderful friend of Ireland.

“I hope it will be this year but there's no confirmation yet of any particular dates.”

As revealed by the Irish Mirror, President Biden is planning to visit Ireland for a six-day trip at the end of April to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement.

Senior sources have confirmed to this newspaper that “high-level talks” are currently underway between the US State Department, the White House, the Irish Embassy and the Irish Government to facilitate the homecoming of America’s most Irish President since John F Kennedy.

A “high-level delegation,” that could involve former US President Bill and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, will accompany Mr Biden on the trip that will span at least four locations, it has been suggested.

The Mirror understands that Mr Biden wants to visit Ireland as a sitting President as there are fears that he may not be re-elected in the 2024 Presidential Election.

A senior Government source told the Mirror on Friday that while it is "very possible" that a visit will happen next month, the Irish Government has not received any notification yet.
