Taoiseach Micheal Martin has revealed he’s “switching the lights off” much more often in a bid to save energy as the cost of living crisis continues to spiral out of control.
Households across the nation are feeling the pinch as providers have significantly hiked prices ahead of the winter.
Speaking at the National Ploughing Championships, the Fianna Fail leader told the Irish Mirror: “Every individual can take measures to save energy.
“We’re not getting into the business of individuals prescribing what they do themselves in their own home but demand and energy reduction is possible, it’s doable.
“We’re switching off the lights much more often, in the office as well. Very simple things can be done to reduce overall energy use and consumption.”
While Tanaiste Leo Varadkar said he would be making use of his smart metre this winter to ensure he keeps his energy consumption levels down.
He said: “We’re fortunate to have our smart metre installed not too long ago, having moved over to a smart tariff.
“If you do have your smart metre, a lot of people have one … I’d advocate making use of that because that lets you know when the best and cheapest time is to use energy.”
The Fine Gael leader said: “It’s simple things, it’s not about not using energy, it’s very often about using energy at the right time.
“So maybe using the tumble dryer or the washing machine or the dishwasher at the time when the most energy is available.”
