Tanaiste Leo Varadkar reacts to 'hard day' as layoffs begin for Twitter's Irish staff

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar has said that his "thoughts are with the people receiving bad news" as hundreds of Irish jobs at Twitter are set be cut.

This morning Twitter began laying off members of its Irish workforce with some staff in its Dublin office receiving emails telling them that they were being made redundant. Many employees also found that they were disconnected from the company's email and other internal systems, and the Dublin office was temporarily closed.

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar reacted to the upsetting news this evening, describing it as a "hard day" for employees at Twitter in Dublin. He tweeted: "My thoughts are with the people who are receiving bad news today, this is a hard day for them.

"While some companies in tech have had to lay off staff recently, the number of vacancies in the sector still outweighs the number of people who are looking for employment. There is hope."

Mr Varadkar added that the Government is "keeping a close eye" on the situation, and that it is here to help with advice on welfare entitlements, job search and job search and education opportunities.

Over 500 people are employed at Twitter's offices in Dublin, and the news was met with shock and dismay by former employees. One person tweeted: "Woke up to the sad news that I'm no longer a Tweep."

A second added: "Enjoyed every minute of the last few years at Twitter. Sad day."
