Tan France has slowly been revealing his newly renovated home on his Instagram page, and as expected from the style maven, the interiors are nothing short of immaculate.
The Queer Eye and Next in Fashion recently posted a photo of his stunning home theatre, highlighting the custom-made (by France's husband, Rob, no less) blue wallpaper that adds to the moody ambiance of the communal space.
'Rob designed this wallpaper in our theater room, which Chasing Paper Wallpaper brought to life,' he captioned the post. 'It’s the rice plants of Pakistani, with the reflection in the water they’re grown in, and I think it’s bloody beautiful.' We concur.
Wallpaper has been on the rise for the last little while, and for good reason – it's an excellent way to subtly customize a space via florals, geometric patterns, and beyond. As with any design choice, there are considerations to be made when implementing wallpaper.
'Lighting is the first thing to notice when selecting a wallpaper for your space,' says designer and founder of Color Caravan, Nicole Cullum. 'If you have minimal natural light, look towards lighter background wallpapers to help brighten the room.
However, the opposite is true in movie room's like Tan's. 'Media rooms need to keep a dark color palette for watching movies so the light from your screen doesn’t bounce around the room and cause distraction.'
Another significant factor, according to Cullum, is scale.
'Will you be covering the entire room or just an accent wall? If you are papering the full room, consider the other elements in your space,' she suggests. 'If you have a fairly neutral palette, with minimal patterns, consider a larger-scale wallpaper to create an eye-catching backdrop. If your room already has several patterns on chairs, curtains, or the sofa, a smaller scale pattern in a soft color would look best as a pretty backdrop.'
Finally, the fun part: color! Consider the amount of paper used; the more walls covered, the more subdued the approach should be.
'If you are papering your entire room, a softer, more neutral palette with some delicate pops of color will fit seamlessly into your overall design,' Cullum says. 'With a more subtle wallpaper, you can layer artwork, wall sconces, and a few nicely framed photos for a sophisticated look.'
