VELLORE: A woman returning home after watching a late night movie was abducted and gang-raped by five other occupants of a shared auto at Katpadi in Vellore district early on Friday.
Police on Tuesday arrested four people, two of them juveniles, and are on the hunt for one more person.
Vellore superintendent of police S Ramesh Kannan said the crime came to light when the woman, who works in a hospital, filed an email complaint to his office.
Police said the woman and a male friend had boarded the auto around 1am on Friday to return to the private hospital. However, the other five occupants in the auto overpowered the couple and took them to a secluded place in the area and gang-raped the woman at knife point. The gang members also robbed them of their mobile phones, Rs 40,000 in cash and two sovereigns of gold jewellery.
Police said that on receipt of the complaint they formed a special team, which tracked down and arrested four people. The two men have been sent to judicial custody and the juveniles to the borstal home. The police have identified the fifth accused and are looking for him.
The accused have been charged under IPC sections including 376D (gang rape and section 4 (penalty for harassment of woman) of Tamil Nadu prohibition of harassment of women Act, 1998.
