Tamil Nadu: New Covid cases go up marginally in two districts

CHENNAI: On Tuesday, six districts reported a marginal increase between one and three new cases of Covid-19 compared to Monday. Eight people, however, succumbed to the infection. At the end of the day, the state had 12,321 active cases, after 2,375 discharges.

With 169 new cases, Chennai was still at the top and was the only district to report cases in three digits. While Coimbatore reported 96 new Covid cases, Chengalpet clocked 78. Ranipet, Tenkasi, and Tirupattur reported one case each followed by Ariyalur, Dindigul, Mayiladuthurai, and Ramanathapuram (two cases each). While Kallakurichi, Nagapattinam, Perambalur and Theni had three new cases each, four districts – Pudukottai, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli and Virudhunagar – logged five cases each.

At 12% of 12,231 active cases – 1495 covid patients – were admitted to hospitals and nearly 88% of them are in home isolation or Covid Care Centres. At least 253 patients with the viral infection are in intensive care with complications that may require life-saving drugs with or without the support of oxygen. “Most patients who come into ICUs are unvaccinated or elderly with comorbid conditions,” said director or medical education Dr R Narayanababu.

On Tuesday, all eight patients had comorbid conditions and six of them were above 70 years. The youngest was a 46-year-old man with chronic renal disease. Among the eight deaths reported on Tuesday, there were two in Tiruvallur and one each in Chennai, Coimbatore, Salem, Trichy, Kanyakumari and Tuticorin.
