Tamil Nadu:‘Enact law to deal with caste killing’

TRICHY: The NGO Evidence has urged the government to enact a separate law to deal with caste killing in the wake of the murder of an inter-caste couple at Thulukkaveli village near Kumbakonam a few days ago. In a report released after visiting the village, Evidence executive director Kathir said the government must provide 10,000 as monthly solatium to the mother of the murdered bridegroom.

S Saranya, 24, a dalit hailing from Thulukkaveli village, and V Mohan, 31, belonging to Naicker community of Thiruvannamalai district, were hacked to death by two people including the woman’s brother on Monday, four days after their marriage. Police have arrested the accused S Sakthivel and his relative Ranjith for the crime. Terming it a patriarchal killing, Kathir said this was unlike other incidents. Saranya’s parents and two other siblings supported the marriage, but it was only her elder brother Sakthivel and brother-in-law Ranjith who planned the murder.
