CHENNAI: The Kelambakkam police rescued a one-month-old baby, who was kidnapped by a couple, in a span of three hours on Monday.
The couple were nabbed while they were waiting to board a train at MGR Central railway station to reach Bengaluru.
Police said they had received a complaint from a man named Hemanth Kumar from Kelambakkam on Monday, about a couple who befriended him and later went missing with his one-month-old son. This was the third child of Hemanth and his wife.
A police team headed by inspector T Magudeeswari scanned Tambaram, Egmore and Central railway stations and bus stops, as they suspected the accused might board a train or a bus to escape.
While frisking passengers at Central station, they found a suspicious-looking couple standing with a baby. The police team confronted them. During questioning, the couple gave contradictory replies.
They were identified as Majnu, 35, and his wife Kokila, 27, from Bengaluru. The man told police that they did not have kids, and hence came to Chennai looking for one.
They befriended the couple from Odisha whom they met at the railway station. On Monday morning, the couple told Hemanth's wife that they would buy milk for the child from a tea shop. The infant's parents let them take the baby with them to the shop, but grew suspicious and filed a police complaint after they did not return.
