CHENNAI: As heavy rains lash the southern suburbs, several areas in Tambaram and Chengalpet are grappling with inundation, causing significant disruptions to access essential services. Chengalpet District Collector Rahul Nadh has advised residents to stay at home for safety.
While rainwater drains are still under construction in certain regions, numerous internal roads in East Tambaram, Mudichur, Selaiyur, Keelkattalai, and Anakaputhur remain submerged. Minister of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises T M Anbarasan said, "I have told the Water Resources Department and Corporation officials to supervise areas where drains are being constructed and arrange motor pumps to reduce waterlogging."
Water has entered many homes, residents said. The civic body has set up 290 relief camps in Chengalpattu District and Tambaram Corporation, equipped with motor pumps and medical facilities to ensure the well-being of residents affected by heavy rains. T M Anbarasan visited a flood relief camp set up at the Corporation Primary School on GST Road, Ward 13 in Pallavaram on Sunday. During his visit, he instructed Corporation officials to urge residents living near water bodies to take shelter at the relief camps.
Tambaram corporation commissioner said “We are deploying 325 tree-cutting machines, 191 JCP machines, 134 generators, and 2194 electricity department officers across five zones. We are following up on complaints on Whatsapp and the control room,” she said. After residents complained about the inundated tunnel in East Tambaram, the civic body pumped out the water, she added.
Additionally, 25 members of the National Disaster Response Team are stationed in Tambaram and Kovalam areas.
