Foreign Secretary and soon-to-be Prime Minister Liz Truss in Downing Street (Kirsty O’Connor/PA)
(Picture: PA Wire)Liz Truss gave a short victory speech after seeing off the final remaining contender, Rishi Sunak, in the Tory leadership race. “I think we have shown the depth and breadth of talent in our Conservative Party,” she beamed. Her supporters, and her opponents, might well agree.
Truss appeared nailed on to win the vote throughout endless hustings and media appearances (and non-appearances), none of which were evidently able to galvanise sufficient support for Sunak or the fellow contenders before him. (Remember as far back as two months ago, in a brief moment of a heatwave, Sajid Javid among others having designs on the post?)
